Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) Beta released
Utkarsh Gupta on behalf of the Ubuntu Release team announces the release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS beta. We’re given details of the released beta products which includes community flavors, told where we can download images to test, given a link so we can report bugs, and more. We’re reminded beta images are “reasonably free of showstopper image build or installer bugs”, and the actual stable release is scheduled for April 23, 2026.

Second Resolute Raccoon test rebuild
Graham Inggs tells us when the second test rebuild was started for Resolute Raccoon, and that it’s finished for all main components except riscv64, and is still running for universe and multiverse. We’re given a link to the results, another for build failures, and requested to help with the build failures. We’re told that Resolute will ship with GCC 15 as default, and that a test rebuild using GCC 16 is underway too.

Streamlining secure boot for 26.10
Julian Andres Klode reminds us how Ubuntu handles secure boot using grub, and alerts us that this can be a “constant source of security issues”. This proposal for Ubuntu 26.10 will address those problems, outlining what is proposed. Julian gives us details of proposed changes and effects on current abilities that were inherited from Debian, and more. He explains why this release is selected: timing purposes.

Ntpd-rs: it’s about time!
Jon Seager writes that he is ‘thrilled to announce’ the switch to another “memory-safe Rust” rewrite being ntpd-rs. We’re reminded of the time synchronization client and server roles, and that it will eventually replace chrony, linuxptp and maybe gpsd. Along with many links; in telling what it is we are told of “some background on the protocols at play”, before moving to timelines and goals. Jon also provides details about the Trifecta Tech Foundation, which is a non-profit behind these tools.

Ubuntu MATE - seeking maintainers
Martin Wimpress reminds us of the creation of Ubuntu MATE back in 2014, and that his involvement in the project “is coming to a close”. We’re told he hopes to ‘hand over the reins to contributors with the time and energy’ to continue the project. We’re told it needs experience in maintaining Ubuntu packages, and if that’s us, we’re asked to get in touch with Martin.

Heads-up: upcoming container-stack updates
Athos Ribeiro warns us that container-stack packages in Ubuntu 25.10, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will update soon. We’re given details of the packages that will be updated, along with numerous links should we require more details.
